Imiquimod + interferon alpha is a combination therapy consisting of two immunomodulatory agents. Imiquimod is a synthetic immune response modifier that acts primarily as an agonist of toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7), leading to the induction of proinflammatory cytokines, including interferon-alpha (IFN-α), interleukin-12, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. This results in activation of both innate and adaptive immunity, with enhanced antigen presentation and cytotoxic T-cell responses[2][4][8]. Interferon alpha is a recombinant or natural cytokine with antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory properties; it binds to the type I interferon receptor on cells to activate JAK/STAT signaling pathways, resulting in upregulation of genes involved in antiviral defense and immune regulation. The combination has been explored for synergistic effects in conditions such as viral infections (e.g., HPV-related warts) and certain cancers by amplifying local immune responses through both direct cytokine supplementation (interferon alpha) and endogenous induction via TLR stimulation (imiquimod)[3][10].
