Overview

This investigational vaccination strategy, developed by researchers at The University of Hong Kong, involves the topical application of imiquimod ointment (a synthetic Toll-like receptor 7 agonist) to the skin five minutes prior to the intradermal administration of a trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV), specifically Intanza 15. Imiquimod serves as a potent immune adjuvant that activates the innate immune system via TLR7 signaling in the skin's dendritic cells. This pretreatment is designed to accelerate, enhance, and extend the duration of the antibody response against both vaccine-matched and antigenically drifted influenza strains. Clinical trials, including Phase 3 studies, have demonstrated significantly improved immunogenicity in both elderly populations with comorbidities and healthy young adults compared to standard vaccination methods.
