Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Imiquimod vehicle (Apotex) is the placebo control formulation used by Apotex Inc. in its clinical development program for a generic version of imiquimod 5% cream. This vehicle contains the same inactive ingredients as the active cream—typically including fatty acids, alcohols, and surfactants—but lacks the active pharmaceutical ingredient, imiquimod. In Phase 3 bioequivalence studies for the treatment of actinic keratosis, the vehicle is used to establish a baseline and demonstrate that the active imiquimod formulations (both the generic candidate and the reference product, Aldara) provide a statistically significant therapeutic effect beyond that of the cream base alone. Imiquimod itself is an immune response modifier that acts as a toll-like receptor 7 (TLR7) agonist, stimulating the innate and acquired immune systems.
