Immature poncirus trifoliata extract is a botanical extract derived from the dried immature fruits of Poncirus trifoliata (L.) Raf., known in traditional Asian medicine as ponciri fructus. It contains diverse bioactive compounds such as flavonoids (notably poncirin), terpenoids, coumarins, phytosterols, and alkaloids. MEPT exhibits multiple pharmacological activities, including inhibition of cell proliferation and induction of autophagic cell death and apoptosis in cancer models (colon and oral cancers). Mechanistically, it acts by inducing autophagy and apoptosis through signaling pathways such as protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin, AMP-activated protein kinase, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), including activation of p38 and ERK proteins. It is traditionally used for gastrointestinal disorders, inflammation, allergies, and pulmonary conditions and has demonstrated effects such as improved colonic motility and constipation relief.
