Immune globulin is a blood product derived from human plasma containing antibodies that help strengthen the immune system. It consists of pooled IgG antibodies from healthy donors and contains the same distribution of IgG subclasses found in normal human plasma (approximately 70.3% IgG1, 24.7% IgG2, 3.1% IgG3, and 1.9% IgG4). The mechanism of action is multifactorial, involving both Fc-dependent and F(ab')2-dependent effects. Immune globulin works by blocking Fc receptors on immune cells, neutralizing autoantibodies, modulating cytokine production, preventing complement-mediated tissue damage, and regulating T and B cell functions. It is primarily used to treat primary immunodeficiency disorders, autoimmune conditions, and inflammatory diseases.
