Drug intelligence / Profile preview
IMMUNO BCG is a BCG-based immunotherapy developed by the Spanish biopharmaceutical company Biofabri for the treatment of superficial bladder carcinoma. [2, 9] It is intended to combat the recurrence of this type of cancer after initial treatment. [2] The therapy involves instilling a live attenuated strain of *Mycobacterium bovis* (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) into the bladder. [10] This stimulates a local, non-specific immune and inflammatory response that leads to the recruitment of various immune cells, such as T-cells, NK cells, and macrophages. [10] These cells then attack and eliminate the cancer cells. [10] According to one source, the product uses the BCG Moreau strain. [7] A Phase 2 clinical trial for bladder cancer prevention was initiated in Spain in 2019. [7]
