Immunobladder is a live BCG-based immunotherapy developed and manufactured by Japan BCG Laboratory for the treatment of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). The product contains the freeze-dried BCG Tokyo 172 strain, which is administered directly into the bladder via intravesical instillation. Its mechanism of action involves the attachment and internalization of the BCG bacteria by bladder cancer cells, which triggers a robust localized inflammatory and immune response. This activation leads to the production of various cytokines and the recruitment of immune effector cells, such as T-lymphocytes, natural killer (NK) cells, and macrophages, which collectively target and destroy the malignant cells. Immunobladder is approved in Japan and several other countries as a standard-of-care treatment for preventing recurrence in high-risk NMIBC and for treating carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the urinary bladder.
