Overview

Immunotherapy with modified extract of Phleum pratense pollen refers to a type of allergen immunotherapy designed to treat grass pollen allergies, primarily caused by Timothy grass (Phleum pratense). The extract is chemically modified, often using agents like glutaraldehyde, to reduce its IgE binding capacity and thereby minimize immediate allergic side effects, while preserving or enhancing its immunogenic properties. This treatment works by gradually exposing the immune system to the modified allergen, leading to desensitization and the induction of immune tolerance. It modulates the immune response by shifting it away from the allergic Th2 pathway, increasing the activity of regulatory T-cells, altering IgE synthesis, and promoting the production of IgE-blocking antibodies, such as IgG4. This process ultimately reduces allergic symptoms like rhinitis and conjunctivitis. Prominent products containing Phleum pratense pollen extract include Grazax (ALK-Abello A/S) and Oralair (which is a mixed grass pollen extract including Phleum pratense). It is administered sublingually or via injection and is indicated for grass pollen-induced allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis.
