Overview

Imodium Multi-Symptom Relief is a fixed-dose combination product containing **loperamide hydrochloride** (2 mg) and **simethicone** (125 mg). Developed by McNeil AB (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson), it is specifically designed to treat acute diarrhea while simultaneously addressing associated gas-related symptoms such as bloating, pressure, and cramps. Loperamide is a synthetic opioid agonist that binds to the mu-opioid receptors in the gastrointestinal tract to slow intestinal motility and prolong transit time, allowing for increased water and electrolyte absorption. Simethicone is an inert surfactant that acts as an anti-foaming agent, reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the GI tract to facilitate their coalescence and expulsion. Clinical studies have demonstrated that this combination provides faster and more comprehensive relief than loperamide alone for patients experiencing diarrhea accompanied by abdominal gas discomfort.
