Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Impetine is a topical antibiotic gel containing 20 mg/g of mupirocin, developed by Reig Jofre Group in collaboration with Ojer Pharma. It is formulated as an innovative transparent and bioadhesive gel in a sustained-release matrix, specifically designed for the treatment of primary skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis, as well as secondary infections like overinfected dermatoses. The drug works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through the specific binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase. This formulation represents the first topical mupirocin antibiotic in a bioadhesive gel form, offering optimized efficacy and safety compared to traditional mupirocin ointments. Impetine received marketing authorization in Portugal in 2019 and has completed Phase 3 clinical trials in pediatric populations.
