Overview

INACTINE is a pathogen inactivation technology developed by V.I. Technologies (later Vitex) designed to enhance the safety of red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. The technology utilizes **PEN110**, a binary ethyleneimine compound that acts as a low-molecular-weight electrophile. Its mechanism of action involves the selective alkylation of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) within pathogens, effectively preventing their replication without compromising the therapeutic function or integrity of the red blood cells. INACTINE has demonstrated broad-spectrum efficacy against a wide range of enveloped and non-enveloped viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Although the technology reached Phase 3 clinical trials for the treatment of red blood cell concentrates, development was ultimately discontinued following regulatory challenges and the developer's shift in corporate focus.
