The inactivated Enterovirus 71 (EV71) vaccine is a biologic product developed to prevent Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) and associated neurological complications caused by EV71 infection. The vaccine is typically produced by propagating the virus in Vero cell cultures, followed by formal inactivation and adsorption onto an aluminum-based adjuvant (such as aluminum hydroxide or aluminum phosphate). Several distinct versions have been developed and commercialized, primarily in the Asia-Pacific region, by companies including Sinovac Biotech, China National Biotec Group (CNBG), and Medigen Vaccine Biologics. Clinical trials, including large-scale Phase 3 studies, have demonstrated high efficacy in preventing EV71-associated HFMD and severe disease in infants and young children. The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection, usually in a two-dose schedule.
