The inactivated EV-A71 vaccine is a Vero cell-derived, inactivated whole-virus vaccine designed to prevent hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71). Developed through a collaboration between the Jiangsu Province Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Beijing Vigoo Biological Co., LTD, the vaccine was licensed in China in December 2015. It is indicated for children aged 6 to 59 months and is typically administered as a two-dose series one month apart. Clinical trials have demonstrated high vaccine effectiveness, exceeding 90% against EV-A71-associated HFMD and severe disease. The vaccine works by inducing protective neutralizing antibodies against the EV-A71 pathogen, which is a major cause of neurological complications and mortality in pediatric HFMD cases.
