This co-administration regimen consists of an inactivated Enterovirus 71 (EV71) vaccine and a live attenuated Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine. The EV71 component, developed by the Institute of Medical Biology at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS), is an inactivated vaccine derived from an EV71 strain of genotype C4 and cultured in a human diploid-cell line (KMB17). It is adsorbed to aluminum hydroxide and is indicated for the prevention of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by EV71 infection in children. The Japanese encephalitis component is a live attenuated vaccine (typically the SA 14-14-2 strain) used to prevent Japanese encephalitis. A Phase 4 clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of administering these vaccines simultaneously in 8-month-old infants to ensure that co-vaccination does not interfere with the immune response to either pathogen or increase the incidence of adverse events.
