This combination vaccine consists of inactivated hepatitis A virus (HAV) and inactivated poliovirus (IPV, Salk type). It is designed to provide simultaneous active immunization against both hepatitis A and poliomyelitis. The hepatitis A component is typically derived from the HM175 strain of the virus, inactivated with formaldehyde, while the polio component includes inactivated strains of poliovirus types 1 (Mahoney), 2 (MEF-1), and 3 (Saukett). The vaccine works by inducing the production of specific neutralizing antibodies against the hepatitis A virus and the three types of poliovirus, thereby preventing infection and disease. It is primarily indicated for individuals traveling to or residing in areas where both diseases are endemic or where there is a risk of exposure.
