Overview

The **inactivated hepatitis A virus vaccine** is a vaccine prepared from whole hepatitis A virus that has been inactivated (killed) so it cannot cause disease. It is used for **active immunization against infection with hepatitis A virus (HAV)**, which causes acute liver disease. The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against HAV, providing long-term protection. It is administered intramuscularly and is highly effective, with immunity lasting at least 15–20 years and possibly longer. Two doses are required for maximal protection, typically spaced 6–12 months apart. Adverse effects are mostly mild (pain at injection site, fever, headache). Its main mechanism is to **induce a protective adaptive immune response (humoral immunity)** specifically against HAV. It is indicated for the prevention of disease in children (generally age ≥12 months) and adults at risk of HAV exposure (including travelers, people with chronic liver disease, men who have sex with men, and others) and is widely recommended[1][2][3][4][5][7][8].
