Inactivated influenza vaccine, whole virion, vero cell-derived is a biologic vaccine developed by Baxter (now part of Takeda) using a continuous Vero cell line platform rather than traditional embryonated chicken eggs. As a whole virion vaccine, it contains the complete set of inactivated viral proteins, including surface antigens like hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA), as well as internal proteins such as matrix and nucleoproteins. This composition is intended to induce a broader immune response and potentially offer better cross-protection against variant strains compared to split-virus or subunit vaccines. The vaccine was specifically developed for pandemic and prepandemic preparedness, with monovalent formulations targeting strains such as H5N1 (marketed as Vepacel) and H1N1 (marketed as Celvapan). The Vero cell production method allows for rapid manufacturing scale-up during a pandemic and provides an alternative for individuals with egg allergies.
