Egg-derived inactivated influenza vaccines are preparations containing influenza virus particles that have been propagated in embryonated chicken eggs, harvested, purified, and chemically inactivated such that they cannot cause influenza[1][3][4]. These vaccines mainly target the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase surface antigens of the influenza virus, training the immune system to recognize and mount an antibody response upon future exposure[3]. They are administered by intramuscular injection and are indicated for the prevention of seasonal influenza infection in eligible populations[1][4]. The primary developers and manufacturers of these vaccines include major pharmaceutical companies. The principal mechanism of action is immune system activation against influenza virus antigens. Egg-based vaccine production may result in mutations in surface proteins (particularly hemagglutinin), which can slightly reduce effectiveness relative to circulating strains[2][3]. Nevertheless, these vaccines significantly reduce rates of influenza-related morbidity and mortality[1][3].
