Overview

The combination of a Vero cell-derived inactivated Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine and a measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is primarily utilized in pediatric immunization programs in regions where JE is endemic, such as Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. The JE component, such as Biological E's JEEV or Valneva's IXIARO, uses an inactivated virus (often the SA 14-14-2 or P-3 strain) grown in Vero cells, providing a safer alternative to older mouse-brain derived vaccines. The MMR component is a standard live-attenuated trivalent vaccine. Clinical studies, notably by Biological E. Limited, have demonstrated that co-administration of these vaccines is safe and does not interfere with the immunogenicity of either component, facilitating the integration of JE vaccination into the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) schedule.
