Overview

Inactivated *Lactobacillus crispatus* is a non-viable microbial preparation (postbiotic) derived from the Gram-positive bacterium *L. crispatus*. It is currently being investigated by Shenzhen People's Hospital as a topical intervention for obesity-induced skin barrier dysfunction. In clinical research, it is administered as a topical solution to the forearms of obese individuals (BMI ≥25) to evaluate its safety and efficacy, primarily serving as the placebo control in trials comparing it against live *L. crispatus* probiotics. The study investigates whether topical application can restore skin barrier integrity, reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and modulate local inflammatory markers such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), as well as the composition of the skin microbiota.
