The IVI-led study (NCT01459900) investigated the "underperformance" of oral vaccines in infants, exploring whether tropical enteropathy—a condition of intestinal inflammation and malabsorption—hinders the efficacy of OPV. In this trial, IPV was administered as a booster to evaluate its ability to induce a robust systemic immune response (IgG antibodies) against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, thereby overcoming the limitations of the oral route in specific environmental settings.
