The inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) associated with the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) in this context refers to the use of IPV in clinical research aimed at improving polio immunization strategies in developing regions, specifically India. Unlike the live-attenuated oral polio vaccine (OPV), IPV consists of poliovirus strains (typically Salk or Sabin strains) that have been killed with formalin, making it incapable of causing vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP). The IVI-led study (NCT01459900) investigated the "underperformance" of oral vaccines in infants, exploring whether tropical enteropathy—a condition of intestinal inflammation and malabsorption—hinders the efficacy of OPV. In this trial, IPV was administered as a booster to evaluate its ability to induce a robust systemic immune response (IgG antibodies) against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, thereby overcoming the limitations of the oral route in specific environmental settings.
