This combination vaccination strategy, evaluated by Aga Khan University, involves the co-administration of an injectable inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) and a bivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (bOPV). The IPV component is a trivalent vaccine containing inactivated poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, which primarily induces systemic humoral immunity (IgG antibodies) to prevent paralytic poliomyelitis. The bOPV component contains live attenuated Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1 and 3, which induces both systemic and mucosal (intestinal) immunity to prevent viral shedding and transmission. This dual approach is specifically designed to enhance immune protection in populations with high rates of chronic malnutrition, where oral vaccines alone often show reduced efficacy in establishing effective gut immunity.
