Overview

This refers to the co-administration of five standard, FDA-licensed childhood vaccines—13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13), diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP), hepatitis B vaccine (HBV), inactivated polio vaccine (IPV), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine—as studied in a Duke University-led randomized clinical trial (NCT03530124). The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2025, evaluated the risk of apnea, bradycardia, and oxygen desaturation in hospitalized preterm infants (born <33 weeks' gestation) following the routine 2-month immunization schedule. While the trial found an increased risk of brief apnea episodes within 48 hours post-vaccination, no serious adverse events were reported, supporting the safety of current vaccination guidelines for this vulnerable population.
