Overview

Inactivated Poliomyelitis Vaccine Sabin Strains (sIPV) is a trivalent inactivated viral vaccine developed for the prevention of poliomyelitis. Unlike the conventional Salk-IPV, which is manufactured using neurovirulent wild-type polioviruses, sIPV is produced using attenuated Sabin oral polio vaccine (OPV) strains grown on Vero cells. This manufacturing process significantly enhances biosafety by reducing the risk of environmental reintroduction of wild-type viruses. The vaccine contains inactivated poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, which stimulate the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against all three serotypes. Versions of the vaccine have been developed by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Sinovac Life Sciences, and Nanolek, with Sinovac's version receiving WHO prequalification in 2022 to support global polio eradication efforts.
