Overview

Inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) is a sterile suspension of three types of poliovirus: Type 1 (Mahoney), Type 2 (MEF-1), and Type 3 (Saukett), grown in Vero cells or monkey kidney cells and inactivated with formaldehyde. Developed by Jonas Salk in the 1950s, IPV is used to provide immunity against poliomyelitis, a highly infectious viral disease that can cause irreversible paralysis. Unlike the oral polio vaccine (OPV), IPV does not contain live virus and therefore cannot cause vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP). It is primarily administered via intramuscular or subcutaneous injection and is a core component of childhood immunization schedules globally to prevent the transmission and clinical manifestation of the poliovirus.
