Overview

Sabin IPV is an inactivated poliovirus vaccine produced from attenuated Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. Unlike the traditional Salk IPV which uses wild-type virus strains, Sabin IPV uses the live-attenuated strains originally developed for oral polio vaccines but then inactivates them to create a non-replicating injectable vaccine. The use of attenuated strains reduces biosafety risks during manufacturing. The mechanism of action involves induction of neutralizing antibodies against all three serotypes of poliovirus, providing protection against paralytic disease by preventing viremia and subsequent invasion of the central nervous system. It is indicated for active immunization against poliomyelitis and has been licensed and used primarily in China and Japan as part of national immunization programs[1][2][3]. The World Health Organization prequalified this vaccine in June 2022[1].
