Overview

Inactivated poliovirus vaccine Sabin strain (sIPV) is a **killed-virus (inactivated) vaccine** prepared from attenuated Sabin strains of poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. Unlike oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV), which uses live attenuated virus, sIPV is administered by injection and cannot revert to a virulent form or cause vaccine-derived poliovirus. sIPV induces systemic immunity and partial mucosal immunity by stimulating neutralizing antibodies to poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, preventing paralytic poliomyelitis. It is used for primary immunization and outbreak response, including against circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (VDPV2). sIPV is used in several countries (notably in China and Japan), is considered immunogenic, and is being developed as a safer alternative to Salk strain IPV due to biosecurity concerns with the production of wild-type strains[1][2][3].
