Overview

Inactivated rabies vaccine is a biologic product containing killed (inactivated) whole rabies virus. It is used for active immunization against the rabies virus, both as pre-exposure prophylaxis for individuals at high risk and as post-exposure prophylaxis following potential exposure to the virus. The mechanism of action involves stimulating the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies against the viral glycoprotein, thereby preventing infection if administered before or soon after exposure. The most common formulations are produced using either human diploid cells (HDCV) or purified chick embryo cells (PCECV), with inactivation typically achieved by beta-propiolactone treatment[1][3][4][5]. The primary indication is prevention of human rabies.
