The inactivated rabies virus vaccine produced by Sanofi Pasteur (marketed under brand names such as Verorab or Imovax Rabies) is a viral vaccine used for the prevention of rabies. It is composed of inactivated rabies virus (typically the Wistar Rabies PM/WI 38 1503-3M strain) grown in either Vero cells or human diploid cells. In the context of Sanofi's clinical development of its tetravalent dengue vaccine (Dengvaxia), this rabies vaccine was utilized as an active control in Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials, such as the CYD23 study in Thailand. Using an active vaccine as a control allows researchers to maintain the double-blind nature of the study while providing a tangible health benefit (rabies protection) to the control group participants. The vaccine works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the rabies virus, providing effective pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis. It is not a treatment or vaccine for dengue fever; the inclusion of 'dengue' in the input name reflects the clinical trial setting where it served as a comparator.
