The inactivated Ross River virus vaccine is a monovalent, whole-virus vaccine candidate developed by Baxter Innovations (whose vaccine business was later acquired by Pfizer) for the prevention of Ross River virus (RRV) infection. RRV is a mosquito-borne alphavirus endemic to Australia and the South Pacific, causing epidemic polyarthritis (Ross River fever). The vaccine is produced using a Vero cell culture system and is inactivated through a dual process involving formalin treatment and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. In a Phase I/II dose-escalation trial (NCT01242670) involving healthy volunteers aged 18–40, the vaccine was administered intramuscularly with aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant. The study results, published in 2013, indicated that the vaccine was well-tolerated and immunogenic, inducing neutralizing antibodies in a dose-dependent manner. However, no further clinical development has been publicly reported in recent years following the divestiture of Baxter's vaccine unit.
