Overview

The inactivated SARS-CoV vaccine is a whole-virus vaccine candidate developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to prevent Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The vaccine consists of the SARS coronavirus (Urbani strain) that has been chemically inactivated, typically using beta-propiolactone, to render it non-infectious while preserving its immunogenic properties. It was evaluated in Phase I clinical trials both with and without an aluminum hydroxide (alum) adjuvant to assess safety and the ability to elicit neutralizing antibodies against the SARS-CoV spike protein. Development of this specific candidate largely stalled following the containment of the original SARS outbreak, though it provided foundational data for subsequent coronavirus vaccine research.
