Overview

The inactivated seasonal influenza vaccine is an injectable immunization designed to protect against the most prevalent strains of the influenza virus expected to circulate each year. It contains whole or split-virus particles that have been chemically inactivated so they cannot cause disease. The primary mechanism of action is induction of an immune response against hemagglutinin and neuraminidase surface antigens from selected influenza A and B virus strains. The composition is updated annually based on global surveillance data and World Health Organization recommendations. Most formulations are produced using egg-based methods but cell culture–based and recombinant options exist. Some versions include adjuvants such as MF59 to enhance immunogenicity (e.g., Fluad for older adults). The main indication is prevention of seasonal influenza infection and its complications.
