The inactivated split virion influenza vaccine refers to a seasonal influenza vaccine formulation used in a clinical trial (NCT01465477) led by the Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. This specific study evaluated the immunogenicity and safety of the 2011 WHO-recommended seasonal influenza vaccine in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome compared to healthy controls. Split virion vaccines are a type of inactivated vaccine where the influenza virus particles are disrupted using detergents, breaking down the viral envelope while preserving key immunogenic surface antigens, specifically hemagglutinin and neuraminidase. This process reduces the reactogenicity of the vaccine compared to whole-virus formulations while maintaining the ability to induce protective antibody responses. The vaccine used in the study was the standard trivalent formulation recommended for the 2011-2012 Northern Hemisphere influenza season.
