Inactivated virus COVID-19 vaccines are a class of vaccines that utilize whole SARS-CoV-2 virus particles that have been rendered non-infectious, typically through chemical treatment with beta-propiolactone. Unlike mRNA or viral vector vaccines that focus primarily on the spike protein, inactivated vaccines present the entire viral structure to the immune system, including the spike (S), envelope (E), membrane (M), and nucleocapsid (N) proteins. These vaccines are usually formulated with an adjuvant, such as aluminum hydroxide, to enhance the immune response. Several manufacturers globally have developed and received authorization for these vaccines, including Sinovac (CoronaVac), Sinopharm (BBIBP-CorV), and Bharat Biotech (Covaxin), playing a significant role in global immunization efforts against COVID-19.
