The inactivated whole virion pandemic influenza vaccine is a biologic agent developed for the prevention of influenza caused by pandemic strains, such as H5N1. Unlike split-virion or subunit vaccines, this formulation contains the entire inactivated virus particle, which preserves the structural integrity of viral proteins and provides natural toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands that act as endogenous adjuvants. Clinical evaluation in Phase 1 trials focused on assessing safety and the ability to induce robust hemagglutination inhibition (HI) titers in healthy adults, comparing its performance to seasonal whole virion and commercial subunit vaccines.
