The inactivated whole virion seasonal influenza vaccine is an investigational biologic developed for the prevention of seasonal influenza. Unlike conventional split-virion or subunit vaccines that use detergents to disrupt the viral envelope, this formulation maintains the intact structure of the inactivated influenza virus. This preservation of the whole virion, including surface glycoproteins like hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) as well as internal proteins, is intended to elicit a broader and more robust immune response, potentially involving both humoral and cellular pathways. It is typically produced by inactivating the virus with agents such as formalin or beta-propiolactone. Stichting Leveronderzoek has conducted clinical research (e.g., NCT01014988) evaluating its safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults.
