The inactivated whole virion Vero cell-derived influenza vaccine is a biologic vaccine platform developed by Baxter AG. Unlike traditional influenza vaccines produced in embryonated chicken eggs, this vaccine is manufactured using Baxter's proprietary Vero cell technology, a continuous mammalian cell line. This method allows for a more rapid scale-up during pandemics and avoids the risk of egg-protein allergies. The vaccine contains the entire inactivated influenza virus, preserving all viral surface antigens, including hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA), which stimulates a broad immune response. It has been formulated as a monovalent vaccine for pandemic strains (e.g., H5N1, branded as Vepacel; H1N1, branded as Celvapan) and as a trivalent vaccine for seasonal influenza.
