Overview
The Inactive Clear Patch is a placebo control used in the CLEAR-3 (Hormone Stabilization for Proximal Suicide Risk) clinical trial conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago. It is designed to match the appearance of an active transdermal estradiol patch to maintain blinding in a crossover study evaluating whether stabilizing ovarian hormones (estradiol and progesterone) during the perimenstrual period can reduce acute suicide risk, hopelessness, and hyperarousal in female outpatients. The patch contains no active pharmaceutical ingredients and is applied for 14 days starting seven days after ovulation. This experimental paradigm allows researchers to compare the effects of natural hormone withdrawal (placebo condition) against stabilized hormone levels (active condition) on short-term suicidality.
