Indacaterol is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) used as an inhaled bronchodilator for the long-term maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It works by selectively stimulating adrenergic beta-2 receptors in airway smooth muscle, leading to muscle relaxation and bronchodilation. Indacaterol has a rapid onset of action (within 5 minutes) and provides sustained effects for approximately 24 hours, allowing once-daily dosing. It is not indicated for acute relief of bronchospasm or for use in asthma without concomitant inhaled corticosteroids due to increased risk of asthma-related death[1][3][4][6].
