Overview

Indane-5-sulfonamide is a small molecule sulfonamide compound characterized by an indane (bicyclic benzene-cyclopentane) core with a sulfonamide group at the 5-position. It acts as an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase enzymes, particularly human isoforms II and XII. Carbonic anhydrases catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide and are involved in physiological processes such as pH regulation and fluid balance. Indane-5-sulfonamide has demonstrated potent inhibitory activity against these enzymes (Ki values in the low nanomolar range), making it a useful scaffold for developing anticonvulsant agents and potential anticancer or antidiabetic drugs. However, it is considered experimental and not approved for clinical use[1][3][7][8].
