Overview

Indigo naturalis oil extract is a topical herbal preparation derived from the leaves and stems of various plants such as Indigofera tinctoria, Isatis indigotica, and Strobilanthes cusia. Traditionally used in Chinese medicine (as "Qing dai"), it has been evaluated for dermatological conditions including psoriasis and psoriatic nails. The main active components—indirubin, tryptanthrin, and isatin—exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Mechanistically, these compounds are thought to modulate inflammatory pathways relevant to skin diseases. Clinical trials have shown efficacy in treating psoriatic nails when applied topically as an oil-based formulation (notably under the brand name Lindioil), with some studies also exploring its use in ulcerative colitis and atopic dermatitis[1][2][3][4][5]. However, comprehensive clinical data supporting widespread use remain limited.
