Indinavir is an antiretroviral drug classified as a protease inhibitor, primarily used in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It works by inhibiting the HIV-1 protease enzyme, which is essential for the cleavage of viral polyprotein precursors into functional proteins required for infectious viral particles. By blocking this enzyme, indinavir prevents the maturation of HIV virions, resulting in noninfectious and immature viral particles. Indinavir was developed by Merck and was marketed under the brand name Crixivan. Although it does not cure or prevent HIV/AIDS, it helps to reduce viral replication and slow immune system deterioration[1][2][3][4][5].
