Indium-111 pentetreotide is a radiopharmaceutical diagnostic agent used primarily for imaging neuroendocrine tumors. It consists of a synthetic somatostatin analogue (octreotide) conjugated to diethylenetriaminopentaacetic acid (DTPA) and labeled with the radioactive isotope indium-111. The compound binds with high affinity to somatostatin receptors—especially subtypes 2 and 5—on the surface of neuroendocrine tumor cells. After intravenous administration, it localizes in tissues rich in somatostatin receptors, allowing visualization via gamma camera imaging (somatostatin receptor scintigraphy/Octreoscan). This enables detection and localization of primary and metastatic neuroendocrine tumors as well as other somatostatin receptor-positive tissues. Indications include diagnosis and monitoring of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, carcinoid tumors, pituitary tumors, Cushing’s syndrome due to ectopic ACTH production, among others[1][2][4][6].
