111In oxine-labeled autologous platelets is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical agent used primarily for platelet kinetic studies and localization of thrombi. The process involves the ex vivo isolation of a patient's own platelets, which are then labeled with Indium-111 oxine (a lipophilic complex of the gamma-emitting isotope Indium-111 and 8-hydroxyquinoline). After reinfusion into the patient, the labeled platelets behave physiologically like native platelets, allowing clinicians to measure platelet lifespan and identify sites of platelet destruction or sequestration (such as the spleen or liver) using gamma camera scintigraphy. This technique is particularly valuable in evaluating patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) to predict the success of splenectomy and in diagnosing various thromboembolic disorders.
