Indium-111-labeled leukocytes (indium In 111 oxyquinoline labeled leukocytes) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical imaging agent used for the scintigraphic localization of inflammatory processes and occult infections. The procedure involves the ex vivo labeling of a patient's autologous white blood cells (leukocytes) with indium-111 oxine (oxyquinoline), which are then reinjected into the patient. These radiolabeled cells migrate to and accumulate at sites of active infection or inflammation through natural chemotactic mechanisms. Imaging is typically performed 24 hours post-injection using a gamma camera to detect the gamma emissions of indium-111. It is a gold-standard diagnostic tool for identifying conditions such as osteomyelitis, prosthetic joint infections, vascular graft infections, and abdominal abscesses, offering high sensitivity and specificity for acute infectious processes.
