Overview

**Indium oxine** is a radiopharmaceutical agent composed of a neutral, lipid-soluble complex formed by the coordination of three molecules of 8-hydroxyquinoline (oxine) with the radioactive isotope indium-111. Its primary use is in nuclear medicine for the radiolabeling of leukocytes (white blood cells) to facilitate scintigraphic imaging of sites of inflammation, abscess, or infection. Following intravenous administration, the complex penetrates cell membranes, after which indium-111 dissociates and binds to cytoplasmic components, enabling its retention within the cells. The indium-111 isotope emits gamma rays (171 and 245 keV) that can be detected by gamma cameras, supporting diagnostic imaging. Indium oxine is used especially for localizing inflammatory processes to which leukocytes migrate and is also employed for labeling platelets to detect thrombi. The molecular formula is C27H18InN3O3.
