Overview

Indocyanine green is a water-soluble, tricarbocyanine dye used as a diagnostic agent in medicine. It is primarily utilized for fluorescence imaging of blood vessels (micro and macrovasculature), tissue perfusion, extrahepatic biliary ducts, lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels during mapping procedures (notably in cervical and uterine cancer), as well as for ophthalmic angiography. Indocyanine green binds tightly to plasma proteins (mainly albumin) after intravenous administration, remains confined to the vascular system, and is rapidly taken up by hepatic parenchymal cells before being excreted exclusively into bile. Its peak spectral absorption occurs at approximately 800 nm, making it suitable for near-infrared imaging applications[1][2][3][5][6][8]. The drug has been approved since 1959.
