indocyanine green + technetium-99m nanocolloid is a hybrid radioactive and fluorescent tracer developed for the precise identification of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in cancer surgery. The agent is formed by the non-covalent binding of the near-infrared fluorescent dye indocyanine green (ICG) to a technetium-99m-labeled nanocolloid (specifically Nanoscan, a rhenium sulfide nanocolloid). This dual-modality approach allows for preoperative lymphatic mapping and deep-tissue localization using SPECT/CT and a gamma probe, while providing real-time, high-resolution optical visualization during surgery via fluorescence imaging. This hybrid tracer is particularly effective in complex anatomical regions where lymphatic drainage is unpredictable, such as in melanoma, oral cavity cancer, and penile cancer. It was pioneered by the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI-AVL) to improve the accuracy of SLN biopsies and minimize surgical morbidity.
