Overview

Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived limbal stem cells, often referred to as induced pluripotent stem cell-derived corneal epithelial sheets (iCEPS), are an experimental cell therapy developed by researchers at Osaka University for the treatment of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). LSCD is a condition characterized by the loss of stem cells at the limbus, which leads to corneal opacity and blindness. This therapeutic approach involves the differentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) into corneal epithelial cells, which are then cultured into transplantable sheets. By grafting these sheets onto the patient's eye, the therapy aims to restore the corneal surface and vision. This modality provides a potentially unlimited source of cells, addressing the limitations of donor tissue scarcity and reducing the risk of rejection if autologous iPSCs are utilized.
