Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells (iPS-MSCs) are a type of mesenchymal stem cell generated through the directed differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). They represent a scalable, standardized, and potentially inexhaustible source of therapeutic cells, overcoming the limitations of adult-derived MSCs such as donor-to-donor variability and cellular senescence. iPS-MSCs possess potent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and pro-regenerative properties, primarily mediated through the secretion of paracrine factors, including cytokines, growth factors, and extracellular vesicles. These cells are being investigated for a wide range of therapeutic applications, including chronic kidney disease (CKD), cardiovascular disorders, and autoimmune conditions. Research often explores enhancing their therapeutic efficacy through genetic modifications, such as the overexpression of specific microRNAs (e.g., miR-19a-3p and miR-20a-5p) to further suppress oxidative stress, inflammatory signaling, and apoptotic pathways in injured tissues.
